The Goodspeed Opera House is one of Connecticut's cultural treasures.
The company is housed in an 1876 Victorian structure above the Connecticut River in East Haddam, 35 miles downriver from Hartford. It is open nine months of the year, closing only in the winter.
Most of the performances are musicals. The original performances of The Man of La Mancha, Shenandoah and Annie all took place at Goodspeed before going on the Broadway.
I've heard of the Goodspeed, how nice to have it so close. Looks like a wonderful place to relax and watch a musical.
ReplyDeleteI'd loved to see some interior shots. Is that possible?
ReplyDeleteI lived near here I'd be visiting here often. I love musical theatre.
ReplyDeleteInteresting facts in this post, I'll love to see some shots from the interior too!
ReplyDeleteThis looks like the perfect atmosphere for a musical such as Showboat. More so than Hair or Rent.
ReplyDeleteSharon, Julie, Julie's mother and I have season tickets together for the touring Broadway shows, which is always an enjoyable evening.
Oh I loved watching old musical movies, and Show Boat with Howard Keel and Ava Gardner was one of my favorites, they really knew how to make a musical in those days! Oh heavens that makes me sound so old haha! I'm not really!! It's a beautiful building Jack, I wish I was there to go and see the show.
ReplyDeleteLove the bunting. Nice to see an old opera house that's still in operation. I'll have to dispatch SDP staff to shoot the SRQ opera house. (Just operas play there.)
ReplyDeleteNice post Jack! Really like the building.
ReplyDeleteLove the name! Neat looking building too. I just logged into City Daily Photo after being away for months and saw that you had an anniversary on the second? Happy (late) anniversary!
ReplyDeleteI bet musicals are great performed there!
ReplyDeleteFantastic, Jack. Great photo and great info. Thanks for sharing! Musicals are fine events to experience.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jack. It is a great place, and I also prefer available light when there is enough. Bye for now!
ReplyDeleteYou must shoe us the inside!
ReplyDeleteNice shot Jack...I am so glad I found your photo blog. I live in Connecticut's "Quiet Corner" and I am always looking for fellow photo bloggers from the state. I have added you to my blogroll and if you want to see some of my images from eastern Connecticut you can visit my photo blog at itqc.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteWhat a great building! We don't see that many large wood buildings here - they are usually brick.
ReplyDeleteNow of course I'm curious about the inside...
ReplyDeleteHartford is lucky to have such a place nearby. I'm sure you and yours have been there many times. We have a nice theater here, too, but we've never been there. I dunno why, something about me "acting up."
ReplyDeleteRe your comment on Ocala..."wimpy"? I guess that's 'cause your Harley is more macho, right? :-) Next time your roar through Ocala, you'd better take me for a ride!
Wonderful ambience about this place! Would love to see a show there!
ReplyDeleteA very nice building! would love to catch a show there.
ReplyDeleteNice looking building. Not a fan of musicals though.
ReplyDeleteA great structure and I would love to see a musical here....my hubs not so much.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely place! I'd love to attend a musical/opera there! Really interesting post for the day and I love your photo, Jack! Hope your weekend is going well!!!

Out of all of my years living in Connecticut I have never gone to the Goodspeed Oprea House. From your entry it looks like it's about time.
