Theme Day: Mailbox

What do you do if you are a bored teenager in a rural part of Bloomfield?  Why, you grab some buddies and a baseball bat (and maybe some adult beverages), pile into a car, and take batting practice on the mailboxes.

What do you do if you are a homeowner?  See above.

It is theme day again for City Daily Photo participants. For May, the theme is "mailbox."  Click here to view thumbnails for all participants.

  1. Ah, yes and age-old tradition in rural areas!

  2. Here, you sneak into gardens and snip the blossoms. Mr. Brattcat caught two young intruders two nights ago doing just that to our daffodils and tulips. Ah, to wait all winter for these beauties to emerge, and then to see them broken so thoughtlessly.

  3. We have exactly the same teanagers in KC and way to many rural roads.

  4. It must take a lot of adult beverages to make that seem like fun.

  5. I have heard of this, but never have experienced it firsthand. Hope the "armor" keeps the boxes safe. Too bad that some people find fun in destruction.

  6. A strange practice. One of my sisters lives in rural Missouri and she told us about having to constantly replace mailboxes. I never could understand why it is so much fun to destroy other people's things.

  7. Strange rural hobby! It must make a tremendous amount of noise.

  8. Nice take on the theme. Smart move by the home owner too. I would go with a concrete filled mailbox.

  9. Must be a universal Friday/Saturday evening event as we see it in our area too! We have a brick mailbox and have avoided this problem. ugh!

  10. Never had this problem. Growing up in St. Louis County, we kept having our mailbox knocked over, but that was from my mother trying to back down the driveway.

  11. It's an expensive proposition to replace a box a week.

  12. It is a shame, but I am not sure I would resist the temptation if I were younger... Good catch in any sense!

  13. Fortunately, I've never experienced this; however, the 'ol mailbox bashing routine has gained popularity in a friend's neighborhood in Ft. Myers. I wonder what the mailman thinks of this gerryrigged box?

  14. Do you know Archer? He and I just had a little chat on Elliot Street two days ago. So funny you should mention him in your comment.

  15. I'm sure we have our share of teenagers with bats, but on our street it's the snowplow that really does the mailbox in.

  16. An inelegant but effective deterrent.

  18. I've seen it in American movies but only the teenager play part, never the owner's! :-)

  19. oh is THAT why we see those things all the time!?! I thought it was for winter, snowplows not running over them or something... never could figure it out...
