Noah Webster House


Noah Webster is one of the best known native sons of greater Hartford.  The famous lexicographer -- dictionary maker -- was born in this house on South Main Street in West Hartford.  The house is owned and maintained by a private non-profit foundation.  It has been open to the public since the 1960s.  The West Hartford Historic Society is affiliated with the foundation and is housed here.

    Webster's Dictionaries were the standard reference of generations, until the current generation when people are looking up words on the internet.

    I have a 40-volume set from the 1880's that combines an unabridged dictionary (not Webster's) with an encyclopedia. It strikes me as odd today that anyone would go to 40-volume set to look up a word.

    My college dictionary is in my office and I still use it frequently. Noah was born in a large house, especially for that time period.

    The house looks brand new! It is wonderful that it has been kept up and put to good use. Is it true what I thought I read recently that old Noah had a little problem with the bottle? (I know the Biblical Noah did, but I thought my historical sources said Webster did also.)

    I figured you'd know for sure. Right?
