Theme Day: Corning Fountain

The February theme for City Daily Photo participants is "Fountains."  It isn't easy finding a good fountain to photograph in New England in the winter.  Most have been turned off and drained.

Today's guest photographer, my daughter Susie, took some great fountain photos when she visited Hartford two weeks ago, in mid-January.

This is the Corning Fountain in Bushnell Park, a park in Hartford's downtown.  It is a big, complicated  fountain with an American Indian theme.  The stag at the top is a "hart," from which Hartford is named.

The fountain's donor was a member of the family that founded Corning Glass in upstate New York.

Isn't Susie a terrific photographer?  This is the last post from the set of pictures she took in her last Hartford visit.  Many more of Susie's photos are on Flickr.

    Interesting explanation of 'hart' and the name. Now, that's kinda cool.

    WOW! It's a gorgeous fountain, Jack! And Susie takes great photos!

    I didn't know hart is another word for stag so never would have guessed how Hartford got its name. Cool information.

    I agree on two counts: (1) Susie does indeed have a good eye for photography and (2) that's an interesting trivia tidbit about the 'Hart' in Hartford. I never knew! Glad Susie was able to help out with today's theme day! Is mgt. considering adding her as a visiting consultant?

    This fountain is gorgeous. You will have to go back in the summer and get a summer view for us.

    Yes, a summer view also... Susie has done an excellent job with composition including the capitol in the background. The fountain itself is stunning with the "hart" at the top like a decoration on a cake.

    I did not know the origin of "Hart"ford... merci!

    She's great, Jack. That first photo is framed perfectly. The building is gorgeous too. It reminds me a bit of San Francisco's City Hall.

    You're right about the fountain being difficult to find right now. I can't think of one that I could shoot!

    Susie has the photographic eye! And that is one beautiful fountain! But I feel sorry for that guy in the second one...he needs some clothing in that weather!

    Re your comment on Ocala DP: The horse is part of a series of painted horses that celebrate Ocala's status as the "Horse Capitol of the World." There are 55-60 of these painted horses in and around Ocala...all with different designs. It's called "Horse Fever." Many of the stores in Ocala carry miniature "Horse Fever" horses that people collect.
