Traffic Jam

How can I have a blog about an American city without showing one of the most familiar sights, a traffic jam?

Hartford is traversed by two interstate highways, U.S. Route 91 (north-south) and 84 (east-west).  Many folks know Hartford only from past experiences sitting in heavy traffic on the road between New York and Boston.  This is a traffic jam on a sunny Sunday afternoon, about two weeks ago; yesterday it snowed in Hartford and the highways would look a lot different.

  1. Such a familiar site! I used to have to drive in this kind of mess to get to work every day. Now I drive on city streets and don't need to get into this kind of crawl. I like my short drive much better.

  2. That is one of the good things about Jackson, traffic jams are rare! Hmmm... snow! And I thought we had it bad with our light frost. Hope you have your mittens ready. :)

  3. I consider myself very, very lucky NOT to have to fight with traffic jams en route to work! It's a 3 mile commute with the biggest obstacle being the one left turn arrow ...

  4. I'm so glad this is a sight I don't have to see every day! There are some things that are awfully nice about living in a smaller city.

  5. How funny that you used to work for AEP! I work for a large German company that makes substation class equipment (circuit breakers, transformers, etc.). If you were involved in purchasing or anything like that I'm sure you know us. We definitely sell to AEP. :)

  6. Yes, we are the "multiple sailors" company. Hee! I like that description. Better than some things people say. Usually I just tell people that I sell junk b/c not that many people are interested in substation equipment. But I do marketing for spare parts on out-of-warranty transformers. It's quite an interesting field.

The hubs also works for the same company. He is here in an expat contract. He's a real, live German. :) We'll be leaving Jackson next March and on to a new place. Should be exciting.

  7. Yuck! :-)

This morning when I left for work there were 326 km of traffic jams in and around Paris. Sorry I'm too lazy to convert, but that's roughly just over 200 miles...

  8. The one thing that I don't miss since moving from Phoenix. Makes me really grateful for my 5 min commute.

  9. This is nothing new to us. But it really caught my eye that this was on a Sunday. We'll get Sunday traffic like this on holiday weekends and in winter when people are coming back from skiing in the Sierras. But generally you can get around the Bay Area on Sundays without too much trouble.

  10. Yep, this is a fine example of a traffic jam on the highway. I'm thrilled to say that I have not been in a traffic jam in over four years!
