The Ice House
In the winter, a crew cuts slabs of ice from the lake and store them in the ice house. All summer long, a crew delivers ice blocks to the iceboxes in the cabins. It has been hot; hope the ice lasts the summer.
There are a few surviving ice houses in the UK, mostly associated with stately homes. All the ones I've seen are underground and lined with stone, usually under a big tree which supplies shade. Apparently they work surprisingly well.
That really is a throwback to the past.
ReplyDeleteIt is surprising with the high temps lately that any ice could survive.

ReplyDeleteI didn't think this tradition existed any more. Good to see it is still alive. I remember iceboxes.
ReplyDeleteGosh I didn't know ice houses still existed.
ReplyDeleteNy mother told me stories about a place at a mill in Tungelsta where they used to get their cut up ice blocks back in the late 1940s.
