Gopher Tortoise


Gopher tortoises face serious threats in southwest Florida as real estate development infringes on
the tortoises' native habitat.  This gopher tortoise lives at Barefoot Beach County Preserve.

    I hope he/she survives and thrives. They sure are fun to see (or at least their burrows) in the wild.

    I used to see them all the time, but not so much anymore. My grandfather would have grabbed this one up and made gopher stew out of it!
