Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Arch
This 1886 arch straddles a road through Bushnell Park between the State Capitol and Bushnell Hall. It celebrates the 4,000 Hartford citizens who fought in the Civil War.
I don't know what the city population would have been at the time, but four thousand off fighting in the war probably means that every one otherwise in the city would have known at least one of them.
This is a gorgeous pic, Jack! Love the arch!
ReplyDeleteIt looks as though it ought to lead to a Bavarian castle, or perhaps a bridge like London's Tower Bridge. It's certainly an impressive memorial.
ReplyDeleteIt's very European looking and sort of elegant.
ReplyDeleteIt is quite distinguished.
