Hartford dentist Horace Wells discovered anesthesia. He is buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery.

ReplyDeleteI researched the quote I saw on the sculpture and discover it is the title of a book of essays: A collection of essays giving an account of Wells' discovery of inhalation anesthesia and his role in ushering in the era of modern anaesthesia. I think I'll look for it since I enjoy reading non-fiction of this type. PS Hope to see more vacation photos of yours.

ReplyDeleteLet's hear a cheer for Horace Wells and his invention of anesthesia. We have all avoided pain because of him.
ReplyDeleteLove the second picture. Interesting about Horace Wells! William Morton vied with him for credit of the discovery of anesthesia. My grandmother was a Morton and supposedly related in some way so I had heard a little about the discovery of ether as an anesthetic.
ReplyDeleteThere is an audio course called The Doctors that discusses their competition in detail. One thing I gathered from the story is that medical researchers including these gentlemen experimented with forms of anesthesia recreationally ... party drugs! It sounded like they suffered some mental side effects. Look up Horace Wells in Wikipedia. He came to a bad end.
