Out of the Jurisdiction: Art Deco in Miami Beach

I took a morning tour of the historic Art Deco buildings in Miami Beach.

The low-lying Art Deco buildings in Miami beach generally have corner windows to offer air circulation, "brows" above the windows to reduce the heat gain, and terrazzo floors for cooling.

The Delano hotel on the left and the National on the right are two excellent examples of later Art Deco hotels.  The doodads at the top are to hide the elevator apparatus and give the hotel identity.
Features:  symmetrical, angular and plain.

The "frozen fountain" is a frequent design feature of Art Deco.  It derives from a fountain at the Paris Expo of 1925, which excited architects and developers and led to the Art Deco style.

A manhole cover, also featuring the frozen fountain design.

The Lincoln Theatre building on Lincoln Road is now a clothing store, but the exterior has
been nicely preserved, along with some interior features.

I am away again until mid-March.  Posts from Peru begin tomorrow.
