Immanuel Congregational Church

Immanuel Congregational Church is on Farmington Avenue in Hartford, across the street from
the Mark Twain House.  The congregation dates back to the early 1800s but the current building
is from 1914.  Immanuel is noted for its fine organ and exceptional choir.

  1. It's a fitting photo for a Sunday post. Rather massive and I would love to see the inside, especially the organ. Have you been inside to listen to it play? I was surprised to learn that during an organ concert at our own Cathedral that I enjoyed the concert. It was a memorial for the composer father of a former student of mine; Stephen Paulus was a prominent and prolific composer who is admired and much missed in the classical music world.

  4. That's quite a statement of a building. I'd love to hear the organ and choir; we still have an organist at our church but the choir is diminishing rapidly as all the members are quite elderly. It doesn't seem to be something that attracts younger folk these days. No good asking me, being deaf doesn't help with singing!

  8. The church must have a huge congregation! The front doors are impressive and I like the windows above the entrance too.

  11. Beautiful church. My only visit to Hartford was in the late 80s (I think it was) during a huge snowstorm, with my flight being the last cleared for landing that day. Due to the snow and attendance at a conference, I didn't get to see much of the city, but the ride in from the airport with snow in the evergreen trees was absolutely gorgeous. Glad I've discovered your blog.

  12. That's a building with a real presence. It certainly doesn't look 101 years old based on its upkeep.
