Bulkeley Bridge

The Bulkeley Bridge is one of the bridges carrying U.S. Route 84 traffic across the Connecticut River into and through Hartford.  It was built in 1903 - 1908 and is one of the last big stone bridges
built  before concrete and steel took over bridge-building.

The bridge was named for Morgan Bulkeley after his 1922 death.
Bulkeley was at various times the Governor of Connecticut, a U.S. Senator from Connecticut, the Mayor of Hartford, the President of Aetna Insurance Company for 43 years and a member of the baseball hall of fame as the first President of the National League.
There is no record if Bulkeley ever slept.

Karl asked yesterday if the river is always this still.  No, not at all, though late summer is usually a quiet time.  It all depends on the weather upriver.  In the spring, this area floods, and the
fall can also bring high water and flooding.  Look here for more information.

  1. Wonderfully tranquil scenes, so unlike the vigorous Mr Bulkeley. I wonder if he was a descendant of the Bulkeley family of Beaumaris on Anglesey who were very active during the sixteenth(?) century and caused a great deal of trouble on that island.

  2. The boats, the bridge, the river. . . all make perfect images for a photograph on a still, quiet day.

  4. The stillness in the river is something else. We are having a bit of that today. It is actually hot, sun is out and no wind.

  5. Great pictures of this historic bridge. I like how the bridge is in context with the city behind it. The reflections are great.

  8. What a great new header for your blog, Jack!! And your captures of the river are terrific!! I agree with Grace, some people do indeed manage to squeeze so much into their lives! I do love the old stone bridges, but you don't see many -- if any here in the northwest!! Hope your weekend is off to a wonderful start!! Enjoy!!

  11. Took us 9 hours to get to NJ yesterday. Large accident Box Truck vs 18 wheeler, 2 fatalities, Rt. 87 closed 7 hours. Yuk. We were 3 hours alone on the Tappan Zee etc.

  13. Some people seem to live by the motto, "I'll sleep when I'm dead." Bulkeley seems to be one of them. And he's remembered with a lovely bridge.
