Archer Mayor

I used to have quarterly business meetings in Brattleboro, Vermont.  While there, I heard about a series of police procedural novels featuring a Brattleboro detective, Joe Gunther, by Vermont author Archer Mayor.  Over the years, I have enjoyed 8 - 10 Joe Gunther books.

Archer Mayor recently spoke at Avon Free Public Library.  He read the opening chapter of his 26th Joe Gunther book -- The Company She Kept -- which will be released in October.  He has a lot of charm, humility and humor.

Mayor began his writing career four decades ago writing history books.  Along the way, he became a firefighter, later a police patrolman, and eventually -- and still -- a death investigator in the Vermont medical examiner's office.  (That has to be the BEST real world job for a crime writer!)  Mayor says his main job is writing, and he writes one book a year.

Be sure to read the third comment, from former CDP blogger, brattcat.  Very funny.

  3. once archer went on an emergency call and was kneeling before an elder when she returned to consciousness. "are you a doctor?" she asked, weakly. "no, ma'am," archer answered. "i write murder mysteries."

  11. Ha ha, nice comment there brattcat. One of my strangers just published his first ever book. A police drama. He was a police officer for nearly 40 years so he should know what he is on about. Will have to check out this author now.

  12. I wish BC would come back. She was a gifted photographers. Don't read crime fiction, I'm afraid. I'm working my way through a long biography of Nikola Tesla at the moment.

  13. I often forget to publish my comments; here it is again. I was happy to see BC's comments. I checked our library that has 33 of Mayor's books and Kindle has four. Guess if I will have to get a few and read them.
