John Ringling made the money he later lost by operating the
Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus.
(Go visit SRQ at Sarasota Daily Photo to learn more about Sarasota and Ringling.)
I don't know if you would call this a painting or a mural -- what IS a mural? --
but I will link it to Monday Murals anyways.

There is a fascinating circus museum on the same grounds as the art museum
you have seen the last three days.
I read late yesterday that a trapeze collapsed during a stunt at a Ringling performance in
Providence, RI, and nine acrobats were seriously injured. My thoughts are with them.

I would say it's mural and it has everything in it that I remember from my childhood about a circus. The colours are fantastic.
ReplyDeleteThis might just make me like circus. That's because I love your photography.
ReplyDeletethat is super! i love it!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely beautiful!
ReplyDeleteBig enough to be a mural methinks. I have mixed feelings about circuses but think this mural is full of fun.
ReplyDeleteI think that the Ringling Brothers actually got their start in Baraboo, Wi. I'll have to check that out and if so, I wonder if there is a museum there, too. Probably not as lavish as this one, tho.
ReplyDeleteIf its painted on the wall its a mural Jack and a fab one at that :)
ReplyDeleteI'd call that a mural! I can only remember attending a real live circus once in my life. I'm not counting Cirque du Soleil, I don't think that counts as a "circus".
ReplyDeleteI, too, love your photography and this is the best way to see a circus as far as I'm concerned! Really sad about the trapeze collapsing! My thoughts are with the injured acrobats as well! Hope your week is off to a good start, Jack, enjoy!
ReplyDeletePreciosas todas las fotos que nos has dejado.
ReplyDeleteSaludos.
It looks like a great mural to me, Jack! I read about the accident in the paper this morning - dangerous stuff.
ReplyDeleteI deeply dislike anything about circus, but I like these works and I am really sorry for those acrobats!
ReplyDeleteAs I read about the accident today, it sounded like it is something that I would neither want to do nor to see performed. Pretty scary!
ReplyDeletetotally awesome!
ReplyDeleteI am just catching up on your posts on the Ringling and all of your pictures are wonderful! What many people don't know is that the Ringling Museum and mansion as well as the Asolo Conservatory are actually under the stewardship of the Florida State University College of Visual Arts, Theatre, and Dance, which is where I worked before I retired. Many FSU students take advantage of valuable educational opportunities through internships or fellowships and all of the employees working there are FSU faculty, staff and graduate students.
ReplyDeleteI'm quite hesitant about circuses in general- I think it's the treatment of animals that bothers me.
ReplyDeleteThe mural is indeed vibrant and colourful, and I quite like the second shot!
Love the perspective in your first shot with the mural. And, including the passerby really provides a feel for how large it is. Thanks for the SDP plug, Jack! I've enjoyed the tour of my museum through your eyes -- well done!
ReplyDeleteI love that painting.
ReplyDeleteThat seems to have a frame. Do murals have frames?
ReplyDeleteThe accident sounds horrific. But then, eight women hanging by their hair sounds nightmarish to me also. I can't say I'm a big fan of circuses...not counting Cirque du Soleil.
This one is a real riot of color and action. Looks huge. Thanks, Jack, for contributing to this week's Monday Mural.
ReplyDeleteDon't know if it's a mural or a painting but it certainly captures the feeling of the circuses I remember attending as a lad.
ReplyDeleteA place that I would love to visit. Your pictures are wonderful, love the motion in your first shot, it's awesome!
ReplyDeleteSince I live quite close to the city of Sarasota and am familiar with it having been the winter home of Ringling Bros Barnum & Bailey Circus, I could not help but notice this post.
ReplyDeleteI would say it was a picture, unless the painting is applied directly to the wall itself . . . if that's the case then it would be a mural.
The Ringling Museum is amazing and hard to believe that one man and had such an eye for art and was able to collect such a vast and rich art collection.
Odd, I'd never heard of Ringling circusses until you mentioned it - and then straight after to read of that dreadful accident. I am ambivalent about circusses. I cried at the clowns as a child, very scary!
