So, as I told you yesterday, I went looking for a couple of Naples mansions to show you.
But, when does a big house become a mansion?
For example, this is a lovely big house. Is it a mansion?
How about this one? It is even bigger.
This one is big, but it seems too friendly to be a mansion, don't you think?
This one is big, too. But, to be a mansion, does it have to be
more imposing than this one? And can mansions have a pelican in front?

ReplyDeleteI would prefer the one you posted yesterday to these behemoths. I am more interested in the people who own and live in them than the structures themselves. According to Mr. Webster, mansion can be defined as: a large and impressive house : the large house of a wealthy person. Obviously I am on the right track. . .I need to see the owners; now that's a project for you, Jack!

They are certainly big but it is an interesting question as to whether they are mansions. I prefer yesterday's house, Jack! Thanks for the tour you are giving us.
ReplyDeleteDictionary.com defines mansions as large, impressive, or stately. I'd say by that standard all of them fit. The third one especially fits, of course, if you're impressed by pelicans.
ReplyDeleteThese huge homes, beautifully photographed, are fantastic. To me a mansion is somewhat hidden from the street, usually at the end of a long winding drive :).
ReplyDeleteIn Victorian England a mansion would need to have a staff of 20 or so servants, including a butler, cook, chamber maids and so on. In addition there would be further staff to maintain the gardens and the stables. Several rooms would be reserved for weekend guests. All very "Downton Abbey"!
