In February 2012, I told you about Prudence Crandall, a brave 19th century schoolteacher who briefly operated a school for black girls in Canterbury, Connecticut. Her statue is in the Capitol in Hartford. This is her Canterbury schoolhouse, shown in a photograph from last August.
Still traveling. I will be back at the beginning of next week.
What a lovely setting for a school Jack ...I wonder what happened to Miss Crandall's students ..... I'm sure she would have been a wonderful influence to her students.
ReplyDeleteSafe travelling.
Interesting history! I wonder how difficult it was to start a school at that time?
ReplyDeleteI love the school names...
ReplyDeleteI attended The Buffalo Female Academy which evolved into The Buffalo Seminary. Unlike Miss Crandall's school, it has only fairly recently become a school (partly boarding) for more than the privileged.
A beautiful spot for this school!
ReplyDeletePeople like her are heroes. I too wonder what became of her students? Lovely capture of a legacy. Safe, speedy travels.
ReplyDeleteWhat a brave and wonderful woman!! And such a lovely school! Thanks for sharing this, Jack! Hope your trip is going well! Enjoy and have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteThat looks like a lovely setting for a school! Have a safe trip home Jack!
ReplyDeleteI'd like to have been in such a beautiful school, with grass around and beautiful trees..
ReplyDeleteI hope everything is well while your trip!
Looks like a beautiful spot for a school. I doubt you'll find many Prudences left in the world...
ReplyDeleteHappy travels Jack..
