Last week Connecticut enacted the nation's strictest gun control law in response to last December's gruesome murders of 26 students and teachers in Newtown. President Obama visited Hartford yesterday to rally support for federal legislation. People have strong feelings for and against restrictions on handguns and high capacity magazines. While the topic of guns is in the news, it seems like a good time to show some of the items in the Colt Firearms collection in the Connecticut State Library.
Below is the entrance to the rooms holding the collection. Above is a detail showing two crossed Colt pistols, taken from the wooden seal shown on the wall.

ReplyDeleteThe role played by Colt in the conquering of native peoples is also a "hot topic." I love wood, though, so I do like the "coat of arms".

I guess it's not the guns I have a problem with so much as it is the brainless, conscienceless people who insist on carrying/using guns so I would definitely prefer to see the guns in a museum. Hope you had a good trip and that you're enjoying being home again!!

ReplyDeleteI don't know one person who owns a gun so the whole topic seems bizarre to me. They are so dangerous. Love the carving though.

Bad or demented guys will always find a way to get guns and kill people. I can see the point in stricter rules, but demonizing guns is pure fundamentalism: I my everyday's life am more afraid of cars...

ReplyDeleteI do think that it should be harder to get a gun than it is to get a driver's license, that there needs to be regulation... and that no one needs the sort of weapon that fires off a hundred rounds before reloading. That's not something one uses to hunt.
Interesting post and pictures. I've always admired the craftsmanship that went into making firearms much as I admire the craftsmanship of any precision tool. I find it somewhat ironic that Connecticut, which benefited greatly from firearms manufacturing, now has the toughest gun control law in the country.

ReplyDeleteYes, I have very strong opinions about this one but this is not the place to raise them. The top photo is a strong image. Looks more like heraldry than weapons.
