The Sanibel Stoop
Let's do Florida again today.
Every day millions of seashells wash ashore on the beaches of Sanibel, an island off the coast of southwest Florida. The "Sanibel Stoop" is a fond term for the way tourists walk the beach in search of the perfect shell specimen.
The Niantic Stoop just doesn't have quite the same ring to it. I'm amazed at some of the shells that wash ashore here as well, especially the once popular and abundant Niantic Bay Scallop. I find them all the time on our beaches.
Got to the island once. Not impressed. Ya, gotta have more than shells. Pleeeeeeeeze! Now, young ladies in bikinis might get me there a second time. Grin!
I'm all too familiar with the Sanibel Stoop. So much so that I rarely do it but still get a kick out of watching tourists participate. I always wonder what they do with all those seashells. Now, Jack...with regard to southwest Florida shooting, the Chairman and CEO of SPD is sputtering that we may need to make arrangements for a friendly inter-local agreement.
We have a number of friends who just love to go to Florida. My law partner is there right now. It's just that I don't do nothing well and I can't figure out what to do with myself down there. We just booked our summer vacation. We're going to the Calgary Stampede - now there's some action!
i must say, we went there last holiday (dec 2011), and i was soooo excited! i had read about it in my travle guide. and we drove and drove. and everything turned out to be private or paid parking, and the seashell museum that was quite far also didnt look like it was worth visiting. i was so disappointed...:( then we just quickly walked a bit on the beach (but we hadnt paid for the parking), and then left again. somehow i expected tooooo much, i guess. maybe next time.. :)

We were at the beach in Spain last week but I couldn't envisage walking bare legged and bare feet on the beach - not in January. This seaside scene makes me dream of warmer shores...

ReplyDeleteAt a park along our beach in Costa Rica they have a sign asking people to leave the shells. Old shells must have some role in the ecosystem.
