The Richardson Building

Marriott has built a Residence Inn into the shell of the old Richardson Building on Main Street in Hartford.

It was designed by the noted architect H. H. Richardson and opened in 1875 as the R. and F. Cheney Building.   The Cheneys operated a silk manufacturing business, which occupied space on the upper stories.  The first level housed several smaller stores.  Later, for many years it was the home of the Brown Thompson department store.  Today, in addition to the hotel, the building has a couple of restaurants and bars.

  1. The hotel sounds like a great reuse for a magnificent building.

  2. It's a gorgeous old building...reminds me of downtown Minneapolis. Nice that it's been repurposed. Probably a great place to stay if you've got business in Hartford.

  3. I like the way Marriotr uses old buildings. We stayed in Washington D.C. in a Marriott that was an old bank. Pretty cool.

  11. I have a soft spot for old brick buildings. This one is beautiful. Pretty cool idea to turn it into a hotel with eateries right below.

  14. Me again! Thanks for the note about Hartford downtown, Jack, you left on my blog. I think when I saw this picture I was really surprised. I didn't expect Hartford to have a scene like this. I am going to have fun looking back on your archives to see more. Of course, I love the homes there. Some of my ancestors settled in Baileyville not far away. So seeing a City nearby is a treat!
