Saint Mary Cemetery

Saint Mary Cemetery is a huge New Britain cemetery.  I never noticed it until the leaves were off when I drove past in late November.  New Britain is a city of immigrants -- Irish, Italian, Greeks and especially Poles -- many of whom are Catholic.  Saint Mary is where they spend eternity.

  1. It's a fine and quiet place to do so.

  2. You mention immigrant groups other than the English spending eternity in New Britain.

We were just in New Britain a month ago, but that was an island group in Papua New Guinea. Other than being an island and very green, It did not look anything like Britain.

  7. It looks big for a place that was hidden in summer foliage. Would love to see it in all its leafy glory.

  13. American cemeteries are so different from those we have here. But yet so moving in their simplicity..

  15. Ah, only part of eternity. The planet itself is impermanent. Really like the quiet orderliness and fall tones in this one.

  17. A familiar looking tree. You may have been near some relatives. You may not realize that St Mary's backs up to the "Protestant" cemetery, Fairview, on the other side of Rte 9.

I see a few comments about its size. Despite ithis, it's nearly full. They've added a couple of quite large crypts to make better use of the remaining space.

  18. Looks well maintained. I bet it's especially peaceful during autumn with the fall colors.
