Mystic Drawbridge

Route 1 is also Main Street in the small, scenic village of Mystic, Connecticut.. 

The Mystic River is crossed by a creaky old drawbridge that opens at 40 minutes past the hour on summer days. Boats line up on both sides, waiting for the old bridge to open.

    The one time I was in Connecticut, there was ONE place I really wanted to go to and that was Mystic. Didn't go. Now of course I regret it even more.

    I know these are common in the east but I am fascinated by draw bridges and love to sit on a patio cafe and watch.

    If the wind subsides and a sail boat returns a little slower than planned, I guess that would cause the sail boat to have to wait around for an extra hour. What if a squall then arose while a bunch of boats were waiting. Sounds like it could be a problem at times.

    I grew up in a a town with a number of drawbridges, which could be a test of patience when trying to get from one side of town to the other. There was no set schedule, only as the need arose, which was often!

    Is it the same river of the movie? I love drawbridges and this one it is really great: I could spend hours there taking pictures of the passing boats...

    First time I have seen one like that usually both sides would lift from the middle of the bridge. Interesting.

    The famous Mystic River ... well, at least there was a movie with the river's name as the title, with Sean Penn acting in it. I love his movies.

    I love that you caught all these different types of boats all eager to get through Jack, I guess there isn't a time limit it stays up, maybe as long as it takes for all waiting to go through! The village of Mystic, how fantastic does that sound!

    Mystic River! I've had a flashback now: loved the movie! :-) This kind of bridge is so cool, I don't think we have any of these here.

    I love the name of the river, too. And I love bridges of all kinds. We have several drawbridges here in Seattle. I've discovered they're very good at causing you to be late for an appointment!! But I still love them! After all I've got plenty of time these days!! Hope your week is off to a good start, Jack!

    Isn't this the town that was the setting for that movie Mystic Pizza? I loved that movie... must have watched it a million times when I was a kid. :)

    If I could draw, this drawbridge would be a beautiful scene to draw, but I can't draw very well, so I'll have to draw on my other talents and write something hilariously funny about your photo. Except I can't think of anything hilariously funny. It's just a great picture all the way around.

    Having lived for years in Southeast Florida drawbridges like this are very familiar to us - in many areas the only way to get across the Intercoastal Canal to the ocean!

    Living on the coast there is an abundance of drawbridges and trains so if you are not late because of the bridge, you were waiting for the train to pass. The redeeming quality of the bridge was tooting the horn in the sailboat for them to raise the bridge... fun!

    Oh my! Good old Route 1! It goes right through Saugus, Massachusetts. Do you remember the radio jingle about Adventure Car Hop? But I digress. :)

    Seeing this reminds me of a drawbridge in Grand Haven, MI which occassionally would get stuck in the up position. I'll let you imagine the ensuing traffic jams. Nice pic...has a quaint village feel to it.

    This looks a little like the Johnson Street Bridge in Victoria, B.C. -- designed by Joseph Straus, who also designed the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. The J. St. Bridge is slowly crumbling and will be removed, to the dismay of some and delight of other Victoria factions.
