Hartford hosts vintage baseball teams from around New England a couple of times each summer. The players wear old uniforms, use old baseballs and bats, pitch underhand, and don't use baseball gloves in the field.
With the emphasis on nostalgia and history, it seems to be a sports version of the war re-enactments that we see occasionally.
Love the b & w -- perfect! And, I really like the perspective in the top photo. That's gotta sting catching a ball sans glove. Do they intentionally cleat the player covering second base, like good 'ol Ty Cobb was known to do? Btw, I agree with you...that sandpiper was more of a maximus (at the very least).
ReplyDeleteBonjour Jack!
ReplyDeleteI also love the b&w choice for these pictures, it's very elegant and your pictures are excellent!

Some quite interesting images!
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of this but I don't get it, either. I think some guys just like to dress up in uniform.
ReplyDeleteNah, seriously, it looks like fun. And I would echo SRQ's comments - the b&w is perfect!
Have a great day.
I wonder if these guys have taken any cues from the underhand softball pitching of the women's NCAA tournament... fast, fast, FAST!
ReplyDeletePerfect in b/w!

super choice to go monochrome with these, jack. what fun it must be to play on one of these teams, what fun it must be to watch.
ReplyDeleteWhy don't you join them, dad?
ReplyDelete(and where do I get one of those great hats??)
How cool that you decided to photograph them in B&W! Perfect.
ReplyDeleteVery nice black & white shots! Well done!
ReplyDeleteAnother great post, Jack. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHow interesting. I had no idea this was done. It's a great idea and probably fun to watch.
ReplyDeleteIt's often impressive to see in real how people were dressed in old times to practice some sports. Could today's players play without gloves nowadays?!...
ReplyDeleteFab photos Jack, wouldn't it hurt catching those balls in the field without a mitt?
ReplyDeleteLove your choice of B&W for these captures, Jack! Terrific! Hope you have a great day! Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteSylvia
It does look like fun!
ReplyDeleteWell I betch didn't know that we have the oldest baseball park in the country right here in B'ham! Yep, Rickwood Field. They just had their annual Rickwood Classic, but I didn't go. I've posted some photos on my blog in the past.
ReplyDeleteWhy didn't they use gloved in the outfield? I'm a baseball dummy. Guess I should know the answer.

Great fun - I love it! Something else for people to re-enact.
ReplyDeleteThat's great and I love your choice of black and white. This looks almost like cricket on the village green!
ReplyDeleteThe B&W suits the subject and I like the low angle you chose. Isn't it great, all the different ways people have fun?
ReplyDeleteI love it and agree that b&w effect works perfectly here:)
ReplyDeleteHow fun, I like the black and white also, brings the vintage quality to the uniforms and photos.
ReplyDeleteI brought out my community garden photos because of your previous post.
What a great event to see in person. Great shots Jack!
ReplyDeleteUnderhand, no gloves? Yow! I enjoy baseball and I'd like to see one of these games.
ReplyDeleteIf you build it they will come.
ReplyDeleteThat would be super fun to watch in person.
A terrific bow to nostalgia!
