Heading North: Beaufort, South Carolina

Marshes, piers and estuaries dot the Low Country.

Beaufort is a beautiful old city in the Sea Islands of South Carolina.

Beaufort has many lovely pre-Civil War houses.
Secessionists are honored down here.

Many of those houses have been converted into inns.

Some remain private homes.
Don't you love that gnarled, sculptural tree?

The tree is nice, but I love all the columns on those houses!

Those first two shots look a lot like Cedar Key. Your other photos are postcards. I've never been there but it looks like I should visit sometime.

Keep this up, though, and by the time you get to Hartford, you'll have to turn around and come back to Florida!

Lovely old homes and great shots as always, Jack! It is so beautiful in the deep south, but their history makes me sad and I wouldn't last long there!! I'm still amazed that I survived Texas. Enjoy your trip back to Hartford!!

It is interesting to follow you through your trip from south to north, in this post I like especially the photo with the canoes.

It's a fascinating sculpture of a tree.

The area looks quite laid back and out of the past.

I love that you make this trip an enjoyable sightseeing event instead of jumping on the interstate and hitting the gas.

I love these houses, Jack! Us driving from Florida -- 16 hours on the road the first day and 7 hours the second - no sightseeing. I like your way better.

Great road trip: you're slowing down enough to take in some sights and collect photos. Fun!

It looks like a bygone era. Lovely.

Oh Malyss you beat me to it :) and yes Jack I do love that gnarly tree sculpture. These mansions are so elegant, wouldn't mind a grand staircase to flounce down :)
