I am familiar with the book and the author. I did listen to his interview on NPR and I think he does significant justice to the fact that you don't have to be stuck in your given situation. There are many excellent and well educated people in the Appalachian areas. As a teacher I see many of the social problems that he discusses in his book. This area is incredibly rich in history and folklore. I was fortunate to have very long lived grandmothers who passed down orally family history, as well as folklore beliefs.

Silas House, (an exceptional KY author), is not fond of this book and suggests reading, "Uncommon Ground", to put the book in context.
