Fifth Avenue South

Fifth Avenue South is the most prominent shopping and restaurant street in Naples.
A building boom is going on.

Simple, low-rise buildings are being bought and torn down, to be replaced by bigger and fancier buildings.  Rents go up, small stores and restaurants can't afford them and move out.
I do worry about killing the goose that laid the golden eggs . . .

I know the feeling. Same thing happening here.

Your concern for killing the goose is well taken. The charming, old Florida of my childhood is long gone. All that building a new construction lacks charm and grace.

It happens here too.

It seems to happening everywhere.

It happens here all the time and then the small guys move to a new area until it starts to get too expensive. It has happened to the whole city here really and so now people who want to buy houses have to go to other towns where they can afford a home. It is really crazy.

Troubling, but it does happen everywhere.

This can work in areas that sorely need redevelopment. But when it's done to maximize the developer's bank account that's another thing entirely.

All about money I suppose, but it changes the feel of an area.
