Out of the Jurisdiction: Catalan Independence Day

On September 11, Catalonians celebrate the date when they lost their independence in 1714.
Tens of thousands gather in the streets, wave flags, sing rousing songs loudly, bang drums even louder and have a wonderful time.  There is a current initiative for Catalan independence -- blocked by the central government and the courts -- so passions might have been even hotter yesterday.

Early reports from Naples indicate that my pool cage and roof are intact and no trees are leaning on the roof or house.  Power is out through the entire community.  No specifics yet to confirm that the inside of the house stayed dry.  Neighbors lost trees and I assume I did, too, but that
has not not yet been confirmed.  All in all, it seems like a pretty upbeat report.

What colourful scenes. Funny that it's a celebration of losing their independence though. Their independent spirit seems strong.
So glad initial reports from Naples are pretty good, hoping that no water flooded in either.

What a day you had to be there for this event, Jack!
Glad your Naples place sounds like it has survived the storm pretty well.

A lot of people have come out for this event. Very colourful!

One of our morning papers says two thirds of Florida is without power.

Wow, that is quite a sea of yellow, red and blue! Obviously, this is a very big deal.
Glad to hear the good news so far about the Naples home.

Your photos are wonderful. The people of Catalonia feel great pride in their state, and your pictures shows that pride. Good to hear the report from Naples is good. I have seen so many pictures of destruction from Florida, especially from the Keyes.

I just did my usual binge-reading of your blog from Barcelona and Provence. All of your photos are wonderful, as per usual, but I especially loved these from Independence Day. Every event I have attended while here (opera, concert, outdoor festival) has had some display of Catalunyan fervor.
