Red-Bellied Woodpecker

Someone has a sense of humor.  Barely any red at all on this woodpecker's belly.

I think the correct name is red-bellied, but that doesn't help much.

Our Great Spotted Woodpecker is barred rather than spotted too. What can you expect from a bird that bangs its head against a tree trunk to impress the ladies?

In the summer we get red headed flickers that look very much like this bird. Always love seeing that flash of red.

Red-headed would suit it better.

What a cute little bird. With the red head maybe he's Irish :)

I think there has to be a sense of humor about woodpeckers in general. What a heck of a way to earn a living, hammering its head against wood. Wait...I think I did that for most of my career...
