Dahlias

Dahlias are among the last flowers to bloom in Elizabeth Park.  But, they are spectacular.

Some flower heads are nearly one foot across.

Looks like a few 'flowerheads' are photographing the flowerheads.
Say cheese!

When I go to California in August, I always make a point to stop for lunch at Sherman Gardens in Corona Del Mar. They have a large section of dahlias and they are huge like these. I love seeing them. they have such a perfect shape to go with their robust size.

At the Sherman Gardens in Corona del Mar, as Sharon mentioned above, the conversation turned to the fact that there was a movie The Black Dahlia about an old L.A. murder mystery.

These have to be among the most satisfying flowers to grow. They do beautifully in the Pacific Northwest and some (I think it's a "spider" type) like your third beautiful shot look like they're lit from within. Ours are being beaten up by rain but have given us several months of nonstop blooms and color.

I see that you are not the only photographer who loves these beautiful flowers. Great shots.

They're not only big but beautiful as well. Colorful flowers certainly are images appreciated by everyone. Re. your comment on my blog re. Conroy. Have you read The Lords of Discipline? Our first stop when we visited Charleston for the first time was the Citadel. One of my former students attended the school and graduated from there, a real Southern boy who was in the Midwest for a few years. He seemed like such an unlikely candidate for the school. Some of the scenes in the novel still haunt me after years of reading it.
