Cathedral of Saint Joseph

The Cathedral of Saint Joseph is the home of the Archdiocese of Hartford.  It replaces
the original cathedral, which burned down in the 1950s.

For those who like irony, the Cathedral is directly across the street from the headquarters of Aetna Insurance Company.

Everyone benefits somethings from insurance, both in heaven and on earth.

Must be an impressive church, judging from your photo.

Interesting reliefs for a new church. Were they insured?

I love both, nice details of the cathedral and irony of its location:)

Were they insured by Aetna? Glad they at least got the money to rebuild!

Love the statuary on the face of this building Jack.

Wonderful details on this church. I find many churches with doors locked unless it is time for mass.

It's a very interesting bit of architecture. As originally constructed, there was no Stations of The Cross iconography, since it's in the scenes of large vertical stained glass along the sides of the sanctuary. Because the building is primarily reinforced concrete, the apse is quite high and open, unimpeded by columns and arches. It also has a tall bell tower (almost 300 feet to the cross) with stunning architecture for a late 50's design.

To add insult to irony, AEtna is no longer in the casualty business, it's sole line is now healthcare. Maybe they saw the safer cathedral as a harbinger?

I hope you can share some more shots .

A most interesting piece of information and architecture. Yes the irony works for me.
